Tea with Crystal

I’ve felt the desire to connect more with you. Mothers and women that all are living these similar lives, yet we often never have the chance to talk and connect. Maybe this will let me feel connected, sharing things I love and hoping in return it gives you something to read and view that isn’t the negative world of social media. I often look to Facebook to feel connected yet I instantly am repelled by people opinions and horrible judgments of others, it is not what we need in our daily life. Constant reminders of hate and political views don’t belong in our mind when we wake up and want to have a peaceful day with our families. Encouragement, pretty words, stories of hope, and maybe links to cute clothes do! ;) I realize real issues are so important, but this will not be the space for them. I love spending my time photographing clients, hanging out with my boys and husband, drinking tea, reading, thrifting and constantly remodeling/redecorating our home. I thought I’d start sharing photographs of those things, poems, recommendations, and just uplifting stories or peaceful ideas to inspire. I want everyone to find the simple joys in life as I work to do the same.

I’ll start here. Nature. When I was in my teens and 20’s I didn't find too much enjoyment in nature, I saw bugs, weeds, dirt, I thought it to be quite boring spending any long amount of time outdoors. After my sons started growing and loving the outdoors, I found myself spending all of my time out there, I also spend 10+ hours a week outside just doing photo sessions, numerous hours at football practices and games, dog let outs and early morning walks. I began feeling connected. I saw leaves with flickering light bouncing around from the sunshine, I heard soft sound of singing birds, I began to crave the blanket of big oak trees overhead and the soft earth beneath my bare feet. Four pedicures a month wouldn’t fix my feet now, I don’t wear shoes in the summer! I love collecting and drying natural flowers and foliage, adventuring through trails and fields is done on the daily, snakes don’t scare me anymore, bugs don’t really bother me and I dream of living a nature inspired life inside just as much as outside. Decorating my home with woods, stones and organic materials has given me a peaceful feeling in each room of our home, it has also given our home a timeless feel, one that isn’t on trend and won’t ever go out of style. Our vacations have also become less of fancy restaurants and outings and more of being in the water and seeing the local wildlife. I know dream of being a nature photographer one day when my boys are grown, traveling the world capturing all of the worlds animals. Dreaming is a must for a peace filled life, it’s so enjoyable to imagine doing things you love and having dreams come true! It gives your brain a break from everyday stresses and I find it so calming.

I hope my sons grow up wanting to be outdoors with their families as much as I love being outdoors with them! During covid-19 as we have all been staying home so much more, it has been a true gift to go outdoors, walk, breathe, and just know that we are right where we are supposed to be. Tomorrow morning my alarm will go off at 7 am and I will wake to make a chai tea, tip toe out to the patio trying not to wake the dogs, (the boys would never wake that early) I’ll sit on our swing and wake slowly to the sun rising.

Daydream maternity session, Crystal's Photography MN - Cambridge Minnesota maternity, newborn photographer

I often spend my days with a creative cloud passing through my head, it’s like a confusing daydream of bathroom remodel ideas, beautiful things to make or photo sessions I want to put together, ones that make me feel like my work is exactly how I wish it was all of the time! This session made me happy! The reason I recommend natural and light colors isn’t because it is your favorite outfit or the style you wear everyday, it is because it is the quietest color that lets the subject be the focus. Soft colors seem to make you feel something special, so next time I say I love white, tans, muted neutrals, my reason behind that is so you love your images more!

Dalton & Kaycee, Minnesota fall wedding at Hope Glen Farm, Cottage Grove

This beautiful wedding was a day filled with joy!  It took place at Hope Glen Farm in Cottage Grove Minnesota on a warm fall day.  The ceremony site was adorned with a draping garland running down an old oak tree, with an abundance of rose petals on the ground where they would stand and say their vows.  From the tree fort on the property, to the guys "party ball" in their getting ready suite the whole wedding boasted with joyful moments laughter!  Kaycee, your heart is so beautiful and your outward beauty is obvious, I am so grateful to have become friends with you over the course of planning your wedding day!

A garden wedding

This beautiful garden wedding had such a romantic feel, the extra chiffon from the dress, the whisky flowers and the classic and vintage Outing Lodge as the backdrop with the stone grounds was lovely.

Carly - Beauty, boudoir film session.

I love having amazing girlfriends that will throw on a silk slip and model for me!  It is so fun to capture women, in history, so many famous artist draw and paint women, I can see why, I love this fine art approach to capturing a boudoir session.  This is simply beauty.  Carly, you are simply lovely, and I adore these images of you!  The images with the distortion are from a 33 year old roll of black and white kodak x-pan a lady at a garage sale gave me!  The others HP5 and Fuji400H.

Paul & Sami

These two have such a great connection, it really shows through images when couples aren't afraid to interact with each other!  This Woodbury Minnesota location at sunset was breathtaking!  Photos taken at the Jake Anderson workshop.

This beautiful styled wedding shoot was put together by Jake Anderson for his workshop in June.  It took place at the beautiful Outing Lodge in Stillwater Minnesota.  The shoot captured the fleeting beauty of the evening, romantic setting and fresh foraged florals. I shot these images with my Contax 645 on medium format fuji400h film, developed by Photovision and Fast Foto.  I am falling in love with fine art photography, especially for weddings, it's uniquely beautiful and really captures light, movement and details so beautifully.

Again, a HUGE thanks to Jake Anderson for this wonderful workshop!  He is an amazing photographer and teacher!  Go follow his work www.jakeandersonphoto.com www.instagram.com/jakeandersonphoto

Breezy Point Resort- fishing- film- photography

On Memorial weekend we booked a last minute trip to Breezy Point on Pelican lake.  The fishing on the dock was fun for the boys, and Jeff got to cruise on his boat, which he has been dying to take out!  It was mostly overcast but I loved the fresh air anyway! I didn't take any cell phone or digital photos, but shot a role of film and really looked forward to getting it back!  It makes the water look so dreamy!!  I am just loving film!! Document family outings, what you see, what you felt, you will want to remember it some day!  xoxo

GREEN

Green everywhere, except outside, which is another story... but we will talk about inside!  I have found so much joy going to green houses, looking to build a green house and bringing everything home from green houses!  Jeff is totally on board, so I don't even need to hide price tags!  Maybe on the pots... but that is not my fault!  I love watering and taking care of these beauties, the kids love them, target makes super cute watering cans and gloves, ( that helps).  My grandma and mom are in love with plants and always have been, so I know it's not a phase, my sister jokes that I may want to slow down and wait to see if I have a green thumb, well I am making it green!  Seeing them brightens up each day!  Do you need some sunshine?  If there is someone out there that does, let me know, I will send them a plant!

Family vacation, Little Gasparilla Island Florida

I love having intentional time to photograph my family and make memories with them.  This year we decided to rent a house on Little Gasparilla Island in Florida, https://www.vrbo.com/764492.  Sea la vie was a beautiful place directly on the gulf.  We choose to rent houses when we vacation as three little boys do not do well eating out three times a day or following too many rules.  This allows them to explore, run free and be boys!  The Island has no cars or stores, only gulf carts to get around, it also has the cutest little chapel you've ever seen on stilts.  Landon learned how to swim this trip, all of the boys collected hundreds of shark teeth and sand dollars.  We also had lots of visitors, Jeff's mom and step dad, my parents and my younger sister and family, it was so great spending a night with each of them, they were vacationing nearby at St. Pete.  The ocean makes you feel so free, it really renewed my soul.  I hope you enjoy a peak into our getaway, we are happy to be home as always!  (I shot half of the images with film, on my contax 645, I love how soft they are.)
